Timetable for RSE:

In consultation with the Principal and teaching staff, the timetable Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) and Social Personal and Health Education (SPHE) in Scoil Uí Cheithearnaigh will be based on the guidelines given by the Department of Education and Science: 30 minutes per week or block periods of longer which would average 30 minutes per week.

Management and Organisation of RSE in our School

• Parents are acknowledged as primary educators of their children and we work in a supportive role.

• All content objectives will be covered by the time the children leave 6th class.

• Teachers’ right to opt out from teaching the sensitive issues will be honoured.
.
• If no teacher is available to teach this content, a visitor approach may be used. Parents will be invited to meet with the visitor before the teaching of the lessons in the school and a teacher will remain present during the teaching of the lessons.

• A parent’s right to withdraw a pupil from the process will be honoured on the understanding that the parent is taking full responsibility for this aspect of education themselves. Anyone wishing to absent their children from RSE lessons should contact the principal in writing.

• Parents will be informed by note before any sensitive content is taught.

• The school has no responsibility for any information which the pupil may receive outside the direct teaching of these lessons.

• Answering questions: It is left to the discretion of the teacher/visitor to answer relevant questions pertaining to the content in a factual, sensitive and age appropriate manner, with in the terms of this policy. However any pupil who asks a question which is outside the content and not age appropriate for the general class will be referred back to their own parents for an answer.
.
• An outline of the lessons and any resources that are in use will be available for parents to view in the school, before the commencement of the programme.

Hints for Families to help with Tables!!!

A. Adding (Suimiú):

a. + 0 When you add 0, there is no change.

b . + 1 When you add 1, the number gets bigger by 1 etc.

c . Doubles: Children should know doubles off by heart . ..........................eg. 3+3=6 4+4+8 5+5=10 etc.
Near Doubles: 4 + 5 = 4 + 4 + 1 or 5 + 5 – 1 5 + 6 = 5 + 5 + 1 or 6 + 6 – 1

d . Buy one get one free 3 + 5 = 5 + 3 or 7 + 2 = 2 + 7 or 2 + 4 = 4 + 2. This is always the case.

e . Know your 10’s: 1 + 9 , 2 + 8, 3 + 7, 4 + 6, 5 + 5, etc.

f . Use 10 when doing sums 9 + 3 = 12 that’s the same as 9 + (1 + 2) = 12 etc.

g . Work on number stories! If I know that 2 apples plus 1 apple is 3 apples then I can work out:
....................1 apple + 2 apples = 3 apples
....................3 apples - 2 apples = 1 apple
....................3 apples - 1 apple = 2 apples

B. Multiplication Tables (Táblaí Méadú):

Tables need to be known by heart!

a. Practice doubles with your child: 2x2; 3x3; 4x4; 5x5; 6x6; 7x7; 8x8; etc

b. Practice patterns with your child: 10,20,30,40,50, etc...................5, 10, 15,20,25,30,35, etc

....................2,4,6,8,10,12,14, etc.... ..............3,6,9,12,15,18,21, etc. ....................7,14,21,28,35,42, etc

c . Buy one get one free! Know your number facts: (When I know 1 fact I know 4!)
............eg. 6 x 8 = 48
..................8 x 6 = 48
................48 ~ 8 = 6
................48 ~ 6 = 8

x 0 When you multiply by 0 the answer is always 0.

x 1 When you multiply by 1 you get the same number.

x 2 The number plus the number again (doubles should be known by heart!)

x 3 The number plus the number plus the number/(the double plus the number)

x 4 Double plus double eg. 4 x 7 = (7 + 7) + (7 + 7)

x 5 Practice your patterns (5, 10, 15, 20 …………….60)

x 9 Multiply by 10 and take away the first number, eg. 8 x 9 = (8 x 10) – 8

x 10 Practice your patterns.

x 6, x7, x 8 ? When a child knows their doubles they are a huge help in doing many sums:
.......................eg. 8 x 7 = (7 x 7) + 7
............................7 x 6 = (6 x 6) + 6
............................9 x 8 = (8 x 8) + 8

Turn your tables round!
..........eg. 5 x 7, I know 7 x 5 from my pattern work.
..........eg. 5 x 9 = 9 x 5 = I know 9 x 5 from my pattern work.

When children have a good grasp of multiplication tables they are ready to learn division.
m.sh

• 8 x 7 = 56
• 7 x 8 = 56
• 56 ~ 7 = 8
• 56 ~ 8 = 7
• 1/8 de 56 = 7
• 1/7 de 56 = 8

Using these tips will help your child with their tables and deepen their understanding of how numbers work!

Fleadh Cheoil na Gaillimhe 2014

Comortas labhairt na Gaeilge
Irish speaking competition

Beidh Fleadh Cheoil na Gaillimhe ann, Dé Sathairn 17/05/14. Le roinnt bliana anuas glacann an scoil seo páirt i gComórtas Labhairt na Gaeilge. D'éirigh an mhaith lenár bpáistí gach bliain go dtí seo.

Is bealach maith í seo le páistí a chur ag cleachtadh a gcuid Gaeilge agus mishneach a fháil ag labhairt le daoine eile nach bhfuil aithne acu orthu - rud deacair do pháistí.

[Foirmeacha ar fáil ar scoil]

The Galway Fleadh takes place in Glenamaddy on Saturday Morning, May 17th. Over the past number of years children from our school have taken part in ‘Comortas labhairt na Gaeilge’ – the Irish speaking competition. We have had success at county, provincial and All-Ireland levels.

This is a very good opportunity for the children to practice their Irish and to show how much Irish they have.

Children who would like to take part in the competition must fill in the form below and return it to the school with the €2 registration fee (which goes to Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann ) on or before Thursday 10/04/14.

Parents accompany their children to the competition and stay in the room with them for the competition. The competition takes roughly one and a half hours.

Congratulations to our school Hurling team who represented us brilliantly in the INTO Mini 7s competition in Ahascragh. They powered their way through to the final of the competition. They played very well in the final, but unfortunately today was not to be our day - we were quite unlucky and went down fighting by 4 points.

Bhí na peileadóirí ar an bpáirc Déardaoin i gCeapach an tSeagail. D'imir siad an mhaith ar fad agus bhí mí-adh orthu nár bhuaigh siad an rud ar fad amach! Fair play daoibh!

Ní bheidh brú ar bith ar aon pháiste leabhar a cheannach i rith an aonaigh - bíonn gach leabhar ar fáil saor in aisce sa leabharlann!!

Next week our school book fair will take place from Monday 24th to Thursday 28th of March. We look forward to a real buzz of excitement around the school during the week! Each child will get a number of chances to visit the fair and view all of the books. However there will be no pressure to buy!! This is not a fundraiser!! All books are available from our town's library free of charge!

We look forward to a great week!

Aifreann Lá 'le Pádraig - Seipéal Naomh Mhichíl 9 r.n. Lá 'le Pádraig....Ard Mholadh!!!!!!!

Bhí páistí ó Rang 1 go dtí Rang 6 ag canadh sa chór ag aifreann Lá 'le Pádraig - bhí siad go hiontach ar fad! Bhí ceol álainn á sheinnt acu freisin, agus bhí dráma déanta ag muintir Rang a Trí faoi scéal Phádraig.

Focal speisialta do mhuintir Náionáin Bheaga a rinne páráid beag ag tús an aifrinn!!

We had our St Patrick's Day mass at 9 a.m. in St. Michael's. Children from 1st to 6th Class sang beautifully in the choir, they also played traditional music for us before during and after the ceremony. Children from Rang a Trí presented a beautiful drama based on the story of Saint Patrick.

Thanks to all of the families who joined us for our mass!

A special word for the children of Naíonáin Bheaga who paraded up the church at the beginning of mass with flags and shamrocks - they did us proud!!

Lá Fhéile Pádraig i Scoil Uí Cheithearnaigh 2014

Beidh aifreann Lá ‘le Pádraig ann maidin Dé Luain ag 9 r.n. Mar is gnáth beidh scoil Uí Cheithearnaigh ag glacadh páirt an-mhór ann.

Béidh páistí ó Rang 1 – Rang 6 ag canadh sa chór agus ag seinim; beidh Naíonáin Bheaga ag súil suas le seamróga; beidh Rang 3 ag déanamh dráma bunaithe ar scéal Naomh Pádraig agus beidh páistí ag léamh agus ag tabhairt suas na bronntannais.

Bí linn, is bealach álainn é seo chun tús a chur le Lá ‘le Pádraig.

We are looking forward very much to St. Patrick’s Day this year. As usual the highlight of our celebrations will be our St. Patrick’s Day mass at 9 a.m. on Monday Morning.

Our choir (consisting of children from Rang 1 to Rang 6) will sing and play music as usual. Naíonáin Bheaga will bring shamrocks to the altar at the beginning of mass; Rang 3 will be dramatising the story of St. Patrick as the gospel; children from various classes will read the prayers of the faithful and bring gifts to the altar.

This is a wonderful celebration and the perfect way to start St Partick’s Day. Please support this mass.

We will be having a céilí in School on Thursday – this is always a great success!

Congratulations to our Quiz teams who did very well in the recent Conradh na Gaeilge Table Quiz for Seachtain na Gaeilge.

Buíochas to all who bought and sold Shamrock!!

Many of our children will be taking part in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. They will be marching with many different groups including, Sporting organisations and Dance Troops.

Coiste na dTuistí PARENTS ASSOCIATION
Scoil Uí Cheithearnaigh

A Chairde!

Upcoming Events:

- Shrove Tuesday is upon us ! Next Tuesday 4th March, 2014. As you know it +has become somewhat of a tradition for parents to serve pancakes to the children on this day! This is always an enjoyable morning for the parents who are helping out and for the children alike.

- We do ask parents to kindly bring along pancakes that morning when dropping children to school, and leave them into the kitchen.

- It is very true that ‘many hands make light work’ and so volunteers for the morning are very much welcomed between 9am to 12:30pm !

- Please let me know if you can help out on the morning 087-9685455.

In advance of St. Patrick’s Day, the school will be selling Shamrock badges at €3 for anyone that would like to participate.

More details will be sent out from the school. It is a small fund-raiser which contributes to the overall fund for purchasing equipment etc. for the use of the children.

Early days yet, but with Easter in April, we are thinking of holding another Quiz on Good Friday 18th April. Last year we held the first one which we got great feedback on, so if you think it is a good idea, we would be interested to hear from you. Please let Ruairi, or any of the folks on the Coiste na dTuistí know, so we can see if there is an interest this year. More details to follow.

The following parents are currently on the Parents Association Committee and are attending the monthly meetings – Mags Connerty, Billy Dempsey, Olivia Dunne, Bernie Reynolds, Garoidin Ni Shioráin, Helen McCarthy, Janice O’Grady, Pauline Keighery, Renate Kohlmann, Ruairi Ó hAnnluain.

Mar is eol daoibh beidh an scoil dúnta Déardaoin agus Dé hAoine i gcomhair briseadh lár-téarma.
As you are aware the school will be closed on Thursday and Friday for our mid-term break.

Bhí cuairt iontach againn inné ó imreoirí ó fhoireann chamógaíochta na Gaillimhe. Bhí 2 chorn acu!
We had a wonderful visit from local members of the Juvenile and minor Galway Camogie panels today – they had 2 all-Ireland cups with them - the intermediate cup and the senior ‘O’Duffy Cup’.

.

They girls were in to promote Camogie Training for u-10s which will start Wednesday evening at 6.30 p.m. (tomorrow) and training for u-8s which will begin on Thursday March 06/03/14 at 6 p.m.

The Indoor Hurling league for u-6 and u-8 boys begins this Friday in Ardscoil Mhuire at 6 p.m.

Hurling Training for u-10 and u-12 boys will commence in the next couple of weeks on Saturday Mornings.

I can’t urge you strongly enough to encourage your children to take part. These are our games - both clubs take fantastic care of the children - I’m speaking as a parent of children who participate, as someone who helps out with training in the club and as our school principal. Give them the chance to be involved!

SAFER INTERNET DAY 11/02/14

Bí Sábháilte ar an idirlíon - ONLINE SAFETY AND CYBER-BULLYING

Mobile Phones, Tablet Computers and the Internet.

A Thuistí,

Over the past number of months and especially since Christmas, there have had a number of instances where parents have come to the school with very upset children because of something that was seen or written online or on a mobile phone or on a website.

Each of us as parents has to ask ourselves a number of questions:

1. Do I know what my child does online?
2. Do I know about viber, snapchat, whatsapp, skype, askfm…….?
3. Does my child know how to keep his/her identity safe?
4. Do I check my child’s device regularly to make sure he/she is not being bullied or being a bully themselves?
5. Do you know how to take a screenshot of what is being displayed on screen?
6. Am I sure that my child is safe online?

If any of these questions causes you concern please inform yourself by visiting webwise.ie or any internet safety website.

Please please see a number of links to safety websites, information websites below.

Nuachtlitir Choiste na dTuistí - Parents' Association Newsletter

A Chairde,

Athbhliain faoi Mhaise! Happy New Year!

We are well settled back by now but just a short note to thank everyone who supported the Family Christmas Hamper raffle in December. Congratulations to all the winners! We hope you all enjoyed them!

Well done especially to all the children who organized the events for Díolachán na Nollag. There was great variety in the various items on offer, something for everyone, and the younger children certainly enjoyed themselves at it !

Both these events raised just under €4000, which will be used by the school to purchase educational resources – the school are currently investigating the viability of purchasing some tablet computers for use with the children.

Coming up this week, on Friday 31st January, will be Grandparents’ Day, where it is hoped that some of children’s grandparents would be able to visit the school, have a cup of tea and a chat. While not all children will be fortunate enough to have grandparents who can be there, the school certainly hopes to make it inclusive for all and that it be a joyful and happy day.

If you are free to lend a hand on the morning with tea / coffee, that would be great!

The morning will kick off at about 1 p.m. for our special visitors!

Finally, in line with the nationwide ballot in school uniform, the school will be sending a questionnaire to all parents over the coming weeks, to find out from us, the parents, what our views are for uniform in the school. Watch out for this coming soon. It is not often that the uniform comes up for review, so now is the time to give your feedback to the school. No doubt this will be interesting and generate some further debate!

The Coiste na dTuistí , have been looking at ways of connecting more with parents and making what we do more transparent to all. We are hoping soon to have a page on the school website and also to publish our aims and objectives, so that the role and the processes can be more clearly defined for all.

If you would like to get involved, please let us know. You can contact the office or Renate at 087-9685455 in advance of any of the meetings, to get in touch!

Rang 6 ar chuairt chuig na meánscoileanna 21/01/14

Chuaigh Rang 6 ar chuairt chuig na meánscoileanna inniu. Chuaigh na cailíní go dtí Ardscoil Mhuire agus na buachaillí go Gearrbhaile. Tugann sé blas do na páistí ar an saol a bheidh rompu ar fad nuair a fhágann siad Scoil Uí Cheithearnaigh. Táimid an-bhuíoch do na scoileanna a éagtaíonn an turas agus an obair lae.

Rang 6 were on a visit to the local secondary schools today. The girls visited Ardscoil Mhuire and the boys visited Garbally. The children "went to secondary school for a day" and got a taste of what will be a head of them next year. We are thankful to to our local schools for organising this valuable day each year.

Beidh lá speisialta againn Dé hAoine 31ú Eanáir - Lá na Sean-Tuistí! Beidh na páistí ag déanamh tionscnaimh ar a sean-tuistí agus beimid ag cur fáilte roimh gach sean-tuiste teacht ar scoil an lá sin bualadh agus labhairt leis na páistí. Ólfaimid cupán tae dar ndóigh! Táimid ag súil go mór leis.

A very special day is planned on Friday, January 31st as part of Catholic Schools Week - Grandparents' Day. The children will be doing some project work in preparation for our celebration and we look forward to inviting our grandparents to visit the school on the day to share stories with the children and to drink a cup of tea! We are looking forward to the day very much!

NEWSLETTER ….. NUACHTLITIR…… SAMHAIN / AN NOLLAIG 2013 NOV / DEC 2013
Coiste na dTuistí PARENTS ASSOCIATION
Scoil Uí Cheithearnaigh

A Chairde,

As November is closing out we are turning our attention to the events in the December calendar! We are delighted to see a strong turnout at Parents Association meetings and would encourage anyone else who wishes to join in the committee, to get in touch (renate.kohlmann@gmail.com / 087-9685455). Items for the agenda should be submitted in advance and you can do so by contacting any of the parents on the committee, Ruairí or myself, current Secretary. Dates will always be announced on the website.

As this newsletter is being written, we are fresh from a most memorable event last Friday 22nd November, where the foundation of Scoil Uí Cheithernaigh and its founder Carmel Uí Fhearghail, were warmly celebrated. It was a very moving occasion with children singing and a wonderful ‘flashback’ film that showed the old and the new and the road along the way. True, it left a few tears, lots of smiles and laughter with the audience!
Friday was a reminder for every child, teacher and parent of the school, just what can be achieved through dedication, vision, belief and working together to achieve a common goal.

The passion and commitment to set up the school and the dedication of those first parents who sent their children to Carmel, can still be felt today as you walk into the school on any day of the week. It is this spirit, ethos of kindness and positive learning experience for the children, that has continued throughout, from early days in Carmel’s home, to the first building in Society Street and now to the fine building we have where we come to school. What a legacy for Ballinasloe, for our children today and for the children to come !
We, the current parents are proud to be part of this and we say, ‘Go raibh míle míle maith agat!

Once again we are planning to arrange a Family Christmas Hamper raffle in December. Please watch out for further details from Helen McCarthy and Linda Cunningham, who are very kindly organizing this event !

The older children will arrange Díolachán na Nollag (Christmas Fair) again this year, on Thursday 19th December. Last year they made craft and jewelry items, baking etc., all of which were on sale on the day and it was a huge success. We look forward to this year’s event and wish them lots of fun with the preparations!

If any parent can you lend an hour or so to help making up Christmas floral candle arrangements, Yule logs etc. or donate materials for making them please get in touch and we will set it up for Tuesday 17th December, just two days before the event. Or, perhaps you could bake a few buns, biscuits or cakes and drop them into the kitchen on the day before, or the morning of the fair.

Thank you to all our parents who give so generously of their time to make these events special and memorable for our children. Your ongoing support for our children and our school is absolutely superb!

In other news on fundraising we are exploring a few opportunities for 2014 and hope to set up a lovely event in time for Grandparent’s Day on 31st January, 2014. More news on this will follow. We are also planning to have a Car wash and re-run the scrap metal collection in springtime. Bag Packing at Tesco was considered good last year so plan to do this again if possible sometime next year. If you would like to get involved in any of these events, or if you have an idea for a good fundraising activity, please do get in contact!

Wishing all the children fun as they embark on a busy spree of preparations for drama, singing, music etc. over the next few weeks!

Road Safety
The school has recently delivered An Cód Sábhála (The Safe Cross Code) to our children so it is a great time to follow that up with them when walking to and from school. We would remind parents to please take extra care when bringing and collecting children to and from school and to be mindful of a few simple points:

1. If your child is young, please walk your child on the footpath or the pedestrian crossing.
2. Never walk your child across the road / roundabout.
3. If your child is older, and they walk to your vehicle directly or to the bus, please insist they follow this safety instruction diligently.
4. Drive slowly.
5. Arrive early.
6. Park safely.

Please check out the informative document on the website www.rsa.ie which goes explains it in a fun way !
http://www.rsa.ie/Documents/Road%20Safety/Leaflets/Leaf_booklets/Going_to_school.pdf

SPECIAL NOTE: It is hoped that all notices, newsletters etc. will be updated on the School Website http://www.bealathanaslua.com/nuacht.html in future. However, if you don’t have access to the website or if you would prefer to receive printed copies, please get in touch with the office!

Tá an téarma ag rith agus ní fada go mbeimid ag smaoineamh faoin Nollag!
Déan nóta de na pointí thíos:

The term is passing quickly and it won’t be long before we have to start thinking of Christmas. Please note the important information below:

Gaeilge sa Scoil: Bí cinnte go n-úsáideann tú Gaeilge chomh minic agus is féidir le do pháistí. Má fheiceann siad go bhfuil ard-mheas agat ar an nGaeilge cabhróidh sé an Ghaeilge a úsáid agus a fhoghlaim ar scoil.

Irish at School – Parents please make sure and use what Irish you have as often as possible with your children. It is vitally important that you speak Irish when in or around the school. This will help your child see the respect that you have for our language and that you don’t see Irish as “Just a school thing”

Ceiliúradh Oscailt na Scoile: Beidh tionóil speisialta ann Dé hAoine seo chugainn, ag 9.30 r.n. Beidh muid ag ceiliúradh oscailt na scoile i 1990. Beidh fáilte roimh iar-thuistí agus iardhaltaí a bheith i láthair chómhaith le baill agus iarbhaill an bhoird Bainistíochta agus Coiste na dTuistí. Táimid ag súil go mór leis.

A Bheith in Am: Tá sé an tábhachtach go bhfuil na páistí ar scoil in am gach lá, cuireann sé isteach ar na múinteoirí agus na páistí eile sa rang nuair a thagann daoine déanach. Mar is eol daoibh bíonn gach doras sa scoil seachas an príomh doras faoi ghlas tar-éis am oscailte.

Airgead Scoile: Más rud é nach bhfuil na costais scoile éalaine/ceardaíochta/cóipeáil /text/7rl íochta agat bheimíd buíoch é a fháil chomh luath agus is féidir. Tá gach airgead ag teastáil uainn chun an scoil a rith de bhur bpáistí. Déan cinnte go bhfuil an síntiúis scoile san áireamh.

Art and Crafts/School Contribution: Anyone who has not paid school expenses (Art/Craft/Photocopying/text/etc) are asked to do so as soon as possible. Every penny collected is used for the good of all of our children. Please make sure and contribute to the voluntary contribution also.

Please encourage your child to tell the teacher when something happens that makes them uncomfortable. Problems only arise when we don’t find out about incidents. If you as a parent know that your child is unhappy about something, please inform us straight away and we will do all in our power to rectify the situation. Please don’t have long meetings at the front gate or telephone conversations for the evening, come in and chat about it – anything else doesn’t help the situation and leads to an unhappy school!

Tá scoil an-sona againn – go mairfidh sí mar sin!

We have a very happy school – let’s keep it that way!

.Ar ais go Nuacht

.

Nuachtlitir 16/10/13

.

Tá Aonach na gCapall thart agus Oíche Shamhna timpeall an chúinne uainn!

The Fair is over and Halloween is only around the corner.

Please note the important point below, especially those regarding safety, punctuality, uniform and finances:

Safety in and around the school: I think that there is general agreement that Coiste na dTuistí – our parents’ association did a very good job negotiating with the council last term and that our traffic problems, while still with us, are greatly reduced. We ask all parents/carers to be very vigilant when dropping-off or collecting children from school. Please do not park dangerously.

Buses: Parents of children who come to school by bus please note that the responsibility for safety and discipline on buses rests with the service provider. If you have any concerns about your child’s safety please contact the service provider without delay. If you have any reason to believe that a child was standing or unbelted for any reason you must contact the service provider immediately – it is a matter of life and death.

Last year buses were provided by C.I.E and privately – all contact details are available from the office.

Punctuality: It is very important that your child is at school on time, late-comers disrupt classes on the other children, and this is unfair! For reasons of security all doors except the main office door will be locked just after school starting time each morning.

Morning time: Each morning the children will assemble in the yard at the rear of the school. They will enter the building at 8.47 a.m. On wet mornings the children will go straight into the school and line up in the senior corridor. Parents who accompany their children to school may use the front door to the left of the school.

Children not accompanied by their own parents must congregate with their classes at the rear of the school.

The school gates open each morning at 8.40 a.m.

The school/Board of Management cannot take responsibility for children who arrive to the school before 8.40 a.m.

Any child arriving after 8.50 a.m. is late for school. Children coming late to school are very disruptive for the other pupils and the teacher. Time lost is impossible to make up!

Art and Crafts/School Contribution: Anyone who has not paid school expenses (Art/Craft/Photocopying/text/etc) are asked to do so as soon as possible. Every penny collected is used for the good of all of our children. Please make sure and contribute to the voluntary contribution also.

School Uniform: Please ensure that your child wears the correct school uniform each day. Please check our school website if you are unsure of the correct uniform.
Use this link . If some children don’t wear the correct school uniform it upsets other children in the class who do – “He/she’s doing it why can’t I?”
This leads to upset children and parents. Please support our policy.

First Holy Communion: Will take place in St. Michael’s Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 3rd.

Confirmation for Rang 5 agus Rang 6 will take place on Saturday 24/05/14.

All other dates for the year were published in the school letter of 21/08/13, which along with this letter is available in the Nuacht section of our school website www.bealathanaslua.com - Please check our site regularly.

Help required! I need some help constructing a new school website – if you have experience using WORDPRESS, I would appreciate some help very much.

Names on clothing: Please ensure that your child’s name is on every item of clothing.

Enrolment: Any families who have children for Naíonáin Bheaga 2014 who are not attending the Naíonra should contact the school as soon as possible.

Coats! Every child should bring a coat to school every day.

We have a very happy school – let’s keep it that way!

We look forward to a very productive, happy year,

In order to ensure the smooth running of the school, please note the following points and file this letter for future reference:

LABHAIRT NA GAEILGE

Is Gaelscoil í Scoil Uí Cheithearnaigh. Ní scoil Bhéarla í. Is í Gaeilge teanga labhartha na scoile, níl cead Béarla a labhairt ach ag am Béarla.

As we are a Gaelscoil, it is the wish of you, the parents, that your children become fluent in spoken Irish from an early age. You chose to send your children to a Gaelscoil because you are aware of the benefits of bilingualism. It is vitally important that you make every effort to speak ‘as Gaeilge’ while in or about the school. We are all part of the Gaelscoil family.

Now is the time to start planning for September, we can all brush-up our ‘Cúpla Focal’ by tuning in to TG4 or Raidió na Gaeltachta. Also Irish classes for adults are held each year and have been greatly enjoyed by all participants in the past.

TUMADH GAEILGE/ TOTAL IMMERSION – to kick start the children’s fluency after the holidays we concentrate on spoken Irish for the first few weeks of school. Our English programmes begin at the end of September. This is most beneficial and sets the tone for the whole term.

AMANNA RANGA/CLASS TIMES

School Begins at 8.50 a.m. School Closes at 2.30 p.m.

Please note:
Naíonáin Bheaga 8.50 a.m. – 12 .00 for the first fortnight (8.50 - 1.30 p.m. from 16/09/13)

Naíonáin Mhóra 8.50 a.m. - 1.30 p.m.

Rang 1 8.50 a.m. - 1.30 p.m. for the first fortnight (8.50 – 2.30 p.m. from 16/09/12)

TINREAMH/ATTENDANCE

As per The Education Welfare Act (2000), which came into effect on 01/09/2002, it is now mandatory for schools to report to the Education Welfare Officer all children who miss 20 days in any school year for any reason. When your child is absent a note must be given to the teacher, a phone call will not suffice. If no note is received the absence must be recorded as ‘Unexplained’.

CONDUCT/IOMPAR

Children are expected to behave with courtesy at all times and to treat property with respect. We have a beautiful building, it is up to all of us to keep it that way.

Good manners are vital and will be expected at all times and on all school related activities.
Certain comments, body language, hand signals and eye gestures can be highly inappropriate – please discuss this with your child – as you would expect, such behaviour cannot be tolerated at school.

ÉADAÍ SCOILE

Caitheann na Naíonáin Éadaí Spóirt gach lá.

Please clearly label all clothing. Clothes are lost every year due to a lack of labelling!!

Please note that we have a lot of per-used school tracksuits/clothing in school which is available to parents. Please contact the office.

HAIR

Hair should always be clean, neat and tidy. Hair colour is discouraged in the strongest possible way.

JEWELLERY

For Health and Safety reasons all necklaces worn by children must be worn inside clothes.
Earrings can become tangled in clothing or pulled in the yard – for this reason the only ear jewellery permitted in school are studs.

Swimming will be organised as follows: All classes from Naíonáin Mhóra – Rang 6 will swim during the year. The first groups will begin in November. You will be informed of your child’s starting date in due course.

Each group will go swimming for 7 or 8 weeks. The cost last year was €6 per lesson to cover instructors, lifeguard and hire of pool and bus. Fee must be paid before classes commence as per Kingfisher policy.

RANGANNA BREISE – EXTRA CLASSES

Beidh na Ranganna Breise ann i ndiaidh scoile. Beidh siad á n-eagrú i Meán Fómhair.

Extra classes take place after school. Last year we had Music, Irish Dancing, Sean Nós Dancing, ‘Skool Yard Gamez’. We hope French will recommence during the year and that we will have some clay modelling classes after christmas.

From September 2009 we have had an optional school jacket. This is a navy fleece lined jacket by ‘Regatta’ and costs €34 – anyone wishing to order should try on a sample jacket in the school and submit their order and payment to the office. The jackets are available throughout the school year, but a minimum order of 5 must be placed by the school at any one time.

CONTACT DETAILS:

If your telephone number or address has changed please inform the office immediately.
It is vital that we are able to contact parents/guardians at all times. Also it is up to you to ensure that your current mobile phone number is logged with School Text so that you can receive important school text alerts.

LÓN SLÁINTIÚIL (Healthy Lunch)

In the interest of your child, Scoil Uí Cheithearnaigh has a healthy lunch policy. Sandwiches/ crackers/ fruit/ chopped vegetables/ yogurt/ non-sugary cereal bars are recommended. Sweet items are not permitted. Chocolate, including chocolate covered biscuits of any description, should not be given as lunch, nor should filled cream biscuits. No fizzy drinks, sweets, bars, chewing gum or crisps are allowed. Every child should bring a bottle of water to school each day. We work very hard to distinguish between food that is suitable for a healthy lunch and ‘treat food’ – we stress that treat food is not bad food but that it should be reserved for treat occasions.

MORNING TIME:

Each morning the children will assemble in the yard at the rear of the school, they will be collected from here by a teacher at 8.47 a.m.

Parents who accompany their children to school may use the front door to the left of the school. Children not accompanied by their own parents must congregate with their classes at the rear of the school.

The school gates will open each morning at 8.40 a.m. On wet days the door at the rear of the school is open from 8.40 a.m. The children line up in the corridor until 8.47 a.m.

The school/Board of Management cannot take responsibility for children who arrive to school before 8.40 a.m.

Any child arriving after 8.50 a.m. is late for school. Children coming late to school are very disruptive for the class and the teacher. Time lost is impossible to make up. Please do not be late.

In the interests of safety of all of our children, all doors close at 8.55 a.m. Anyone arriving after this time will enter through the main door and have their names recorded.

BUSANNA – BUSES

Parents of children who come to school by bus please note that the responsibility for safety and discipline on buses rests with the service provider. Rang a Sé are working hard preparing for ‘Díolacháin na Nollag’- our Christmas sale of work and Bake Sale organised by 6th Class. It takes place on Thursday 19th December.
Please see attached note.

Christmas Raffle: Please find enclosed a card for our ‘Christmas Raffle’. This is one of our main fundraisers for the year.

There are only 9 lines per card as we do not want to put undue pressure on families to fill long cards. Extra cards are available from the office if needed. As in other years there will be a little seller’s prize also. We do not ask children to go door to door selling lines – this is a raffle for family, relations and friends.

Lines cost €2 each or 3 for €5. The draw will take place at our school assembly on Friday 20/12/12.

As has been our tradition it is you, our parents, who contribute the goodies for the hampers.

Please send in your items as soon as possible. We hope to make up the hampers for display early next week if possible, but definitely before Friday 13th of December.

Thanks again for your support.
(If you have an old basket at home we could use it for our hampers!!)

Táimid ag súil go mór leis an Nollaig!

Christmas Hamper Raffle
Crannchur na Nollag

A Chairde,

We hope everyone is well and looking forward to the Christmas season.
It is time once again to organise our Christmas Hamper Raffle. Last year the raffle raised almost €1,500 making it our most successful fundraiser of the year.

As usual, we are asking parents to donate something for the hampers and we would appreciate if each family could send in a tin of biscuits, sweets or chocolates, a bottle of cheer or other goodies. Last year we received enough items to put together 12 hampers and it would be great if we could do the same again this year. Please drop your hamper item(s) into the collection box inside the school entrance doors or to the office by Monday, 9th December.

Also, if anyone has any spare empty hampers, please drop them into the office.
Over the next few days we will be sending home a card of lines for each family to sell. There will be 9 lines on the card and each line will cost €2 or 3 lines for €5. If anyone would like extra cards, please contact the office. (As usual, we do not expect children to go door to door selling). Raffle cards should be returned to the school by Wednesday, 18th December.

The raffle will take place in the school on the last day of term (Friday December 20th) and parents are welcome to attend. The seller of each winning line is given a selection box and there is always great excitement from the children and a great atmosphere in the halla.
Many thanks for your support.

Go raibh maith agat.

Parents Association Committee.

StreetSmart is designed for three distinct age groups: 4-5, 5-8 and 8-12 years. There is a combination of interactive activities available for each age group.
StreetSmart also involves a streetscape mat which invites children to carry out typical, everyday cycling or pedestrian tasks. They can dress up and adopt various roles such as a nurse, doctor, fire officer or ambulance driver. The Road Safety Authority representatives are on hand to coordinate the activities with the help of teachers at the school. It is an action packed, fun filled day that enhances the student’s knowledge of the rules of the road".

Anti-Bullying Information Evening Provided for the Parents of 4th and 5th Class following completion of the Sticks and Stones Anti-Bullying Programme

Bullying

Repeated aggression, verbal, psychological or physical conducted by an individual or group against others who are not able to defend themselves in the actual situation.

Physical bullying could include kicking, pushing or beating the victim while the most common means of psychological bullying are teasing, name calling, exclusion and cyber.

TELL TALES SIGNS OF BEING BULLIED

Unhappy/moody (snaps at you more severely or more often than usual.)

Unexplained physical injuries (bruises, scrapes and scratches)

Torn clothing

Does not want to go to school (makes excuses often)

Grades are going down (not performing well)

Unwilling to discuss their school day

Withdrawn/moody/tense (wants to spend long periods of time alone)

Change in eating habits either over eating or not eating enough

Says he/she has no friends and hates school

Getting into trouble more often /acting out

Change in the relationships and friendships with others

Art work expressing turmoil

Anxious/fidgety

Bed wetting and nightmares

Unable to sleep

Depression/self harming/suicide attempts/severe anxiety

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR CHILD IS BEING BULLIED

Take your child seriously and Keep Calm!

Listen and be patient

Is this a repeated incident?

Asses level of bullying

Encourage Assertiveness, not aggressive nor behaviour

Inform the school

Start with the teacher: who, what, when, where

Work with the school

Make a change: if nothing else is working, change it.

Ask an older sibling to help or friend to intervene.

Widen your child’s circle of friends, i.e more activities in other genres

Take the child out of the situation. If that means big changes …..make them!

Get help: if your child is down and not coping, please seek professional help.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR CHILD IS THE BULLY

Be patient, Inform the child if inappropriate behaviour by giving alternatives (it could be they may not be aware they are bullying)

Teach the child the difference between aggression and assertive behaviour

Teach empathy often: Role playing is helpful

Be open, approachable and positive to your child

Assess what is going on with your child

Is your child trying to recapture power by feeling bullied somewhere else by older siblings, or other mates in other clubs?

Self esteem: How does your child feel about him/herself?

Teach them about being diplomatic and inclusive

Don’t accuse, just give options. “What if you had done this instead of acting out”?

Teach your child to not take things personally: by not reacting and laughing some things off

If bullying is more of a habit: you may need to observe and step in with options for your child until they can wing it themselves.

IF YOUR CHILD REALISES HE IS BEING A BULLY AND FEELS BAD

Please listen to him/her: Give praise for realising their behaviour can hurt others.

Help your child to forgive themselves: Explaining we all learn as we mature into adults and everything will be ok.”I’m sorry” goes a long way.

Turn over a new leaf: We all get a Re-do or a Do-over. The more chances we give ourselves the better people we become.

Give new options for bullying behaviour.

REVIEW

After some time has passed, have a short conversation with your child and review. As the bully or the victim of bullying, reviewing will help your child to see that they can come through a situation and are ok. Analyse what worked and what didn't work so well, so that next time they know how better to deal with other situations that come up.

NEWSLETTER ….. NUACHTLITIR…… 6ú FEABHRA 2013
Coiste na dTuistí ...........PARENTS ASSOCIATION

Scoil Uí Cheithearnaigh

A Chairde !

If the strength of a school could be measured by the input of the parents, then anyone in Tesco’s on Christmas Eve could not but have been proud ! Parents and older siblings of our pupils, turned out at short notice to lend a hand to pack bags, pass a holiday greeting and raise funds for our school. Sincere thanks go to everyone who volunteered to help out on this busy day. We are all truly grateful.

Also thank you to everyone who assisted with the events in the lead up to the holiday - making up the hampers, raffle, baking etc., which all helped to make for a very memorable time !
It is very rewarding to be able to help out with these events for the school and the children and if you would like to get involved in any way, do let us know!

Funds raised at the events were as follows:

- Bag Packing €950
- Hampers €1,465
- Christmas Fair €1,811

Great as these events were, the current reality is that part of these funds had to be diverted to the basic day to day running of the school, as opposed to buying specific equipment etc.
We outlined the importance of fundraising activities particularly this year, and a further note on this and the finances of the school, will be distributed shortly.

Upcoming Events:

1. Shrove Tuesday 12th February, pancakes will be served to the children as usual! We have had feedback to limit the amount this year so children planning to go for the record number eaten on the day may be disappointed, but we are sure will still enjoy them ! We do ask parents to kindly bring along pancakes that morning when dropping children to school, and leave them into the kitchen. Volunteers for the morning would also be appreciated ! Please let me know if you can help out on the day 087-9685455.

2. Scrap Metal
Collection to Raise Money for School! In early March there will be a scrap metal collection at the school where you can drop off any old scrap metal that you may have lying around. There will be a number of skips in the school car park for a couple of days for this purpose. The amount collected will be sent down to Hammond Lane who will weigh it all, and depending upon the weight, they will pay us for what we collect. We are hoping this could be good timing for you to clear out any scrap metal lurking around, so that we can raise funds for the school. Tell your friends – help them with their clear out – it will all help the school!!

3. A Table Quiz for all the Family, will be held in The Halla, on Good Friday, March 29th, from 6-8pm. We hope you will come together with your children for a Family Fun Table Quiz, in the early evening. If you would like to help us set this up, perhaps you have experience of running one before, please get in touch

Not a day goes by, where Road Safety around our school is not discussed.

The importance of road safety cannot be stressed enough.

There have been reports of cars blocking in other cars and some taking off fast with undue care.
Please set off a few minutes earlier in the morning, to give yourself enough time to park, let children off and pull out safely, at this very busy time in the mornings and at collection time.

Once again please read the reminder below, and if a friend or relative is bringing or collecting your children, we would kindly ask that you make them familiar with the points listed below:

1. Please Slow down !
2. Be Careful at Drop Off and Collection times !
3. Be Courteous to Other Drivers !
4. Do not block other drivers in!
5. Do not block the Roundabout !
6. Do drive the Right way around the Roundabout !
7. Be Patient – we’ll all get there in the end !
8. Why not get there a few minutes earlier & remove the stress !

THANK YOU for exercising due care. Please watch out for the school busses who drop off children directly in front of the school gate. Please remember to leave space for the busses in front of the gates.

If you would like to attend any of the parents' association meetings or if you have any suggestions/ input please email Renate Kohlmann at renate.kohlmann@gmail.com or you can phone 087-9685455.

Nuachtlitir Choiste na dTuistí

A Chairde !

It seems that mid-term is just over and here we are a few short weeks away from the Christmas holiday break.

As you know from Ruairi’s note of 22th Nov, many different drama / performances are being organised both pre and post Christmas, which we are all looking forward to very much. Well done to Rang 1 who sang their hearts out and to the Sean Nós dancers, who were all terrific on Saturday !

We are planning a Family Christmas Hamper raffle for the final day of term. We would kindly request if you can send in a box of sweets, biscuits, bottle of Christmas cheer or other goodies etc., to drop them into the box in the Geárodin’s office before Friday 15th December.

  • The older children are preparing for the Christmas fair (Diolacháin na Nollag) on Thursday 20th December. They are making craft and jewelry items, baking etc., all of which will be on sale on the day.
This annual tradition has become a good way to clear out a few of the old toys, books, dvds, from your home and also offers great experience in entrepreneurship for the older classes, who take charge of stalls, and create items for sale on the day.
  • We are asking the parents to help out in one or two ways. If you are free on the morning of Tuesday 18th December, can you lend an hour or so to help making up Christmas floral candle arrangements, Yule logs etc. ? Donations of materials for making them would be most welcomed on the morning. Last year, the parents involved had a most enjoyable morning, coffee and a chat, while making them up and I am told they all sold out!

If you are pressed for time and this would not suit you, perhaps you could bake a few buns, biscuits or cakes and drop them into the kitchen on the day before, or the morning of the fair.

  • Thank you to all our parents who so generously give of their time to make these events special and memorable for our children, and in so doing support our children and school each year.
  • We have been looking at a number of different ideas for fund-raising, and are planning a Table Quiz in February (date to be confirmed). If you would like to help us set this up, perhaps you have experience of running one before, please get in touch.
  • Fundraising is very important to us, particularly this year as the financial contribution from the Department of Education has not yet been received and in addition, it will be lower than last year.

To that end we need all your support to get behind the fund raising activities that are planned! Also just a gentle reminder to send if your voluntary contribution (if not already done so) as soon as possible.

  • Road Safety Update - The importance of road safety cannot be stressed enough.

    As a reminder:
    1. Please Slow down !
    2. Be Careful at Drop Off and Collection times !
    3. Be Courteous to Other Drivers !
    4. Do not block the Roundabout !
    5. Do drive the Right way around the Roundabout !
    6. Be Patient – we’ll all get there in the end !

The town engineer has completed an assessment is in the process of drawing up a more robust plan for traffic management. The first step was to block off those parking spaces. While this may be seen as an inconvenience as we can no longer park there, it was in fact quite dangerous, for two main reasons. First, the footpath for children to walk to school was directly in front of the parking area and secondly, cars were reversing onto the roundabout from these parking spaces. We will update you further when we have more details.

In the meantime, thank you for exercising due care. Please watch out for the school busses who drop off children directly in front of the school gate. Please remember to leave space for the busses in front of the gates.

Finally, if you would like to attend any of the meetings or if you have any suggestions/ input please email Renate Kohlmann at renate.kohlmann@gmail.com or you can phone 087-9685455.

Wishing Everyone, Children, Teachers, Parents and Extended Families, a peaceful and happy Christmas holiday!

Le meas,
Renate Kohlmann
On behalf of the Parent’s Association Committee

Tá ár bPolasaí Iontrála nua reidh agus tá sé ar an gcéad leathanach den suíomh seo. Léigh é le do thoil agus cuir do chlann agus do chairde agus daoine a bhfuil suim acu a bpáistí a chur chuig an Ghaelscoil ar an eolas go bhfuil roinnt athruithe ann.

Our updated Enrolment Policy is available to read on the homepage of this website. Please read it and tell your family/friends and anyone who you think will be interested in sending their children to the Gaelscoil in the future, that there are a number of changes to our policy.

Ranganna Gaeilge - Update 2

Ranganna Gaeilge gach Céadaoin sa scoil. Fáilte roimh cách!

Irish classes continue in the school each Wednesday. New members welcome!

16/10/12

Ranganna Gaeilge - Eolas suas go dáta - Update

Beimid ag smaoineamh faoi na ranganna a eagrú ar an gCéadaoin in ionad an Luan toisc go mbíonn ciorcal comhrá Gaeilge i Gullane's gach Luan.

We hope to plan our Irish classes for Wednesdays and not Mondays as stated earlier. This change is so that we don't clash with the 'Ciorcal Comhrá' that takes place each Monday evening in Gullane's Hotel. A 'Ciorcal Comhrá' also takes place each Thursday Morning from 11 am to 12 noon in Gullane's Hotel. All welcome!

Ranganna Gaeilge do Thuistí
Irish Classes for Parents

Táimid ag iarraidh ranganna Gaeilge a shochrú do thuistí.
We hope to organise Irish classes for parents who would like to improve their own standard of Irish and who would like to be able to take a more active part in their children’s homework.

The classes will take place in the school on Monday nights and will be given by one of our current infant parents.

Beidh bosca ag an doras d’éinne le suim.
There will be a ‘Post box at the door’ where parents can register their interest.

Please fill in an Interest Sheet and pop it in our post box so that we can find out the level of interest.

Nuachtlitir 03/10/12

Safety in and around the school: Please be vigilant when dropping-off to school or collecting children from school. We do not want to have an accident or an injured child. Please talk to your child(ren) about how to safely come and go from school. Children should never cross roads unaccompanied – they should use the footpaths to the school gate.

Roundabout: Please drive correctly around the roundabout in front of the school. On a roundabout you don’t expect to have cars coming the wrong way – children don’t expect cars to come the wrong way! A number of parents have expressed their concern that an accident is going to happen – we must all work together!

Morning time: Each morning the children assemble in the yard at the rear of the school, they will be collected from here by their class teacher at 8.50 r.n. Parents who accompany their children to school may use the front door to the left of the school.

Children not accompanied by there own parents must congregate with their classes at the rear of the school.

The school gates will open each morning at 8.40 a.m.

The school/Board of Management cannot take responsibility for children who arrive to school before 8.40 a.m.

Any child arriving after 8.50 a.m. is late for school. Children coming late to school are very disruptive for the class and the teacher. Time lost is impossible to make up

First Holy Communion Will take place in St. Michael’s Church at 11 a.m. on May 4th.
All other dates for the year were published in the school letter of 16/08/12, which along with this letter is available in the Nuacht section of our school website www.bealathanaslua.com

Book rental/photocopying and Art and Crafts/School Contribution: Thanks to all who have paid their book rental/photocopying and Art and Crafts/School Contribution already. If you haven’t already done so please contact the office as soon as possible. Every penny collected is used for the good of all of our children.

Names on clothing: Please ensure that your child’s name is on every item of clothing.

Damhsa Ghaelach: Irish dancing classes with Múinteoir Gráinne have resumed on Tuesdays.

Sean Nós with Martina resumes on Friday, 05/10/12.

Curriculum Night: Our school Curriculum Night has been rescheduled for Thursday next, 11/10/12, at 7.15 p.m. in the school.

New Staff Member: We are delighted to welcome back Múinteoir Gráinne, who will be rejoining us in the coming weeks. Gráinne taught with for a number of years until changes in the Department of Education on enrolment numbers led to her having to leave to go on the Clonfert panel. Gráinne has taught for the last 2 years in Carabane National School.

Enrolment Policy: The Board of Management, in conjunction with the Parents Association (Coiste na dTuistí) and staff are updating our enrolment policy for 2012/13. Schools have enrolment policies in order to make decisions on all applications in an open and transparent manner consistent with the ethos of the school and legislative requirements.

At the next meeting of Coiste na dTuistí on Wednesday, 10th October, the following enrolment criteria will be discussed, the board will then formulate our updated school policy and circulate it to all parents.

Here are a list of the criteria that will be used in the updating of our current enrolment policy. If you have any comment or question please contact me or speak to any member of Coiste na dTuistí before Wednesday Night.

Enrolment Criteria:

1. Children being raised in Irish who are 4 on or before 30th April – an interview will be involved in order to maintain the ethos of a Gaelscoil.

2. Siblings of children already enrolled in the school / siblings of past pupils who are 4 on or before 30th April

3. Children who are enrolled in “ Naíonra Tír na n-Óg” and who attend for a minimum of one school year and who are 4 on or before 30th April. (certificate will be required as proof of attendance)

Proms i Leisureland 17/10/14

Bhí an-am againn ag na ‘Proms’ Dé hAoine seo caite. Bhí na céadta páiste ar an ardán ag an am céanna ag canadh le ceolfhoireann 100 píosa! Chan gach duine amach agus bhí sé soiléir go raibh gach duine ag baint an-taitneamh as. Bhí sé iontach go raibh slua chomh mór tuistí ansin le bheith páirteach san ócáid. Buíochas don fhoireann a d’oibrigh chomh-dian leis na páistí agus a bhí ar an ardán ar an oíche. Beimid ag súil leis an gcéad uair eile!

A wonderful even was had by all at our school Peace Proms performance on Friday, 17/10/14. Our children sang in a choir of thousands accompanied by a 100 piece symphony orchestra! All the children sang out beautifully and it was obvious that everyone was enjoying themselves. It was wonderful that such a large group of our parents were able to be present on the night to celebrate the occasion. Many thanks to the staff who prepared the children for the event and sat with them during the concert. We are looking forward already to our next trip to the Proms!!
